FDIC Wine Auctions
Since 2007, Worley Auctioneers has served as a contracted auction provider for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), assisting with the liquidation of furniture, fixtures, equipment, and other specialized assets from failed banks across the country.
Silicon Valley Bank alone held approximately $209 billion in assets and $175 billion in deposits at the time of its collapse, making it the largest U.S. bank failure since the 2008 financial crisis and one of the largest in American history.
Shortly afterward, First Republic Bank, with about $232.9 billion in assets, also failed and became the second-largest bank failure in U.S. history, ultimately being seized by regulators and sold to JPMorgan Chase.
Situation
Following the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and First Republic Bank, federal authorities identified significant executive wine collections located in Napa Valley and Sonoma County that were tied to the institutions.
These private cellars contained rare and desirable wines accumulated by bank executives over many years. Because the collections were housed in high-security facilities and subject to federal oversight, the liquidation process required careful reconciliation of existing inventory reports, strict chain-of-custody procedures, and complete compliance with federal asset reporting standards.
At the same time, the wine needed to be marketed effectively to collectors capable of recognizing its value.
Solution
Worley Auctioneers deployed two trusted wine specialists with federal security clearances to work directly within the secure facilities where the collections were stored.
Our team carefully reconciled the physical inventory against existing documentation, verifying vintages, quantities, and storage conditions before preparing the collections for sale. Once confirmed, the wines were curated into two professionally marketed auctions designed to attract serious collectors.
Worley’s in-house specialists ensured the entire project complied with FDIC regulations and federal reporting requirements, while also coordinating the secure removal and transportation of the wine from restricted facilities.
Through strategic marketing and national exposure to collectors, the auctions reached buyers actively seeking rare Napa and Sonoma wines.
Outcome
The auctions successfully connected these prestigious collections with motivated collectors across the country.
Government agencies and attorneys routinely rely on Worley Auctioneers when complex asset liquidation requires precision, compliance, and detailed reporting. Our experienced team ensures every project meets strict regulatory standards while delivering competitive auction results—often exceeding initial market value estimates.
