Historic Neil’s Heritage House Restaurant Contents Sold at Auction

For decades, Neil’s Heritage House in Kettering served as a popular gathering place for celebrations, weddings, and special occasions throughout the Dayton area. After more than 50 years in operation, the restaurant ultimately closed its doors, and the contents of the historic venue were offered to the public through an online auction conducted by Worley Auctioneers.

The auction gave bidders the opportunity to purchase items from the beloved restaurant while marking the end of an era for a longtime local institution.

A Dayton-Area Landmark

Neil’s Heritage House first opened in the mid-20th century and quickly became a well-known supper club and banquet venue in the region. During its peak in the 1960s and 1970s, the location hosted countless:

  • Wedding receptions
  • Class reunions
  • Family celebrations
  • School dances
  • Community events

After operating for decades, the restaurant closed in January 2006. Several years later, Serena Walther—granddaughter of founder Neil Swafford—returned to Dayton and worked with her husband at the time to renovate and reopen the restaurant in 2011. The reopening was initially met with strong community interest fueled by nostalgia for the long-standing venue, but the restaurant eventually suspended operations again in 2014.

Restaurant Equipment and Furnishings Sold at Auction

Following the closure, nearly 400 items from the restaurant and banquet facility were offered through an online auction.

According to reporting from the Dayton Daily News, the auction included a wide variety of equipment, furnishings, and fixtures from the restaurant.

Items available to bidders included:

  • Commercial kitchen equipment
  • Restaurant furniture
  • Vintage red vinyl dining chairs
  • Banquet service items
  • Décor and fixtures from the restaurant

Before the auction concluded, prospective bidders were able to attend a public preview at the restaurant’s location on West Schantz Avenue, allowing them to inspect items in person prior to placing bids.

Interest from the public was strong, with competitive bidding taking place on a variety of items as buyers looked to acquire pieces connected to Dayton dining history.

Future of the Property

The 2.2-acre property that includes the three-story, approximately 24,000-square-foot restaurant and banquet building, along with an adjacent residential duplex, was also listed for sale.

As reported by the Dayton Daily News, potential redevelopment possibilities discussed for the site included a restaurant, brewpub, medical offices, or residential housing.

While the building itself awaited a new owner, the auction of the contents marked a significant transition for a location that had served the community for generations.

Auctions Help Transition Longtime Businesses

When long-standing businesses close or change ownership, auctions often provide an efficient way to distribute equipment, furnishings, and assets while giving the public the opportunity to purchase items connected to local history.

Worley Auctioneers regularly conducts auctions for restaurants, businesses, estates, and specialty collections, helping sellers connect with motivated bidders across the region and beyond.
