Classic Car Dealer Retirement Auction Celebrates a 43-Year Legacy

After more than four decades in the antique and classic car business, Harrison Township dealer Ron Hilen closed a memorable chapter as he retired and auctioned the contents of his long-running dealership.

As reported by the Dayton Daily News, Hilen spent 43 years restoring and working on classic vehicles, including 1940s Cadillacs, 1950s Fords, and even cars connected to the 1988 film Rain Man. His business, Hilen’s Antique & Classic Cars, became known not just as a dealership, but as a destination for automotive history and rare restoration parts.

Worley Auctioneers was honored to help bring that legacy to market through a series of online auctions featuring classic cars, real estate, rare parts, memorabilia, and collectibles.

A Lifetime Devoted to Classic Cars

Hilen’s career reflected a deep passion for preserving automotive history. According to the Dayton Daily News, one of his most notable restoration projects involved three 1949 white Buick Roadmaster convertibles used in the movie Rain Man. The article reports that he worked nonstop for 30 days to meet production needs and even appeared briefly in the film.

In the story, Hilen summed up his career simply: “It’s been a great ride.”

That statement captures the personal side of auctions like this. These events are not only about assets changing hands. They are also about honoring a lifetime of work, preserving history, and connecting collectors with items that matter.

Auctioning Vehicles, Parts, and Automotive History

The sale included the contents of a 20,000-square-foot business, with assets ranging from restored vehicles to vintage automotive parts and memorabilia. The collection featured items that appealed to both serious collectors and hands-on restorers, including:

  • Antique and classic automobiles
  • Rare vintage auto parts
  • Manuals and automotive literature
  • Vintage license plates and collectibles
  • Shop equipment and memorabilia

The collector market responded strongly. As noted in the article, early auction results generated significant bidder activity, drawing participation from buyers across multiple states and Canada.

For collectors, restorers, and enthusiasts, the sale represented more than an auction. It was a rare opportunity to acquire pieces from a carefully built inventory assembled over decades.

Why Collector Car Auctions Create Strong Interest

Classic car and automobilia auctions often generate strong participation because they combine nostalgia, scarcity, and passion. In the Dayton Daily News coverage, William Hesch Jr. of Worley Auctioneers explained the appeal well, noting that when people have the chance to pursue classic cars they once drove or always wanted, bidding can become very competitive.

That same dynamic applies to rare parts, signs, literature, and vintage accessories. Many buyers are not just purchasing an item. They are buying a connection to automotive history.

A Well-Earned Retirement

As the final items moved out of the showroom, Hilen looked ahead to a quieter pace of life. In the article, he joked that retirement would involve putting “a chair out in the front yard and watch[ing] the grass grow.”

After 43 years in the classic car world, it was a fitting close to an extraordinary run.
